This build is made in ZETA
1.0
and tested in the system by myself and other people (even those who
only needed a few parts of the total build - thanks to all that tested
and gave me the info that led me to make this tutorial). I've tested
the build under ZETA, RC3 and Neo and the im_kit worked with no problems
there (even with the emotion's). In BeOS R5 it won't work (seems I have
to do a separate build there, so that's work on but I don't have the
binaries yet so you better use the alpha version over at BeBits)
Update: The BeOS R5 Bone binaries can be found at the bottom on this tutorial ;).
P.S. I've had a friend that tested the im_kit in Neo with
TrackerNewFS installed and the im_kit works just fine there, only
thing is that the TrackerNewFS doesn't load the im_client/im_emoclient
Tracker add-on. This will probably be in all distro's with the TrackerNewFS
installed.
If you want to use your contacts you can always drag them from the people folder to the client in the Deskbar.
Now lets make things clean first (considering you have any
prior installations). We don't want the older file to interfere with
the new ones (for those advanced they know how to update the client and
can take certain parts of the build to use in their installation). If
you would like to be sure that you could still use your old settings
you can always do a backup.
One of the things that you will see if you look in the folder /boot/home/config/add-ons
is that the alpha version from BeBits still use the uppercase files and
the newer builds use lowercase files to store there settings.
This will effect the way the settings are read in the im_server so it's
best not to mix them up, you should better delete the old settings
(backup) and any stuff that's lying around from the im_kit. It's
better to begin with a clean plate. ;) Considering the changes they
made in the past for the protocols like MSN.
If all the files from a prior installation are removed you have to extract the im_kit.zip to /boot. The files will be placed in the correct folder as you can see in the screenshot.

After the im_kit.zip file is extracted it is time to unpack the im-kit_attributes.zip file (to any folder - temp), and run from terminal. This will create the necessary mime-types that you can use in querys and Tracker ...

Now it's time to set the im_kit to work. The first time you have to startup some file manually. These are:

Now you should see the im_server icon in the Deskbar and the im_client or im_emoclient bellow that. So up to setting up your connections.

Right click the im_server icon in the Deskbar and go to "Settings". Here you can give your settings for all protocols, be sure to click on "Save" for every protocol separately.

Once you have saved all your settings you can close the window and right click the im_server icon again and then choose "Set Status" on "Available". If everything went well you will see the progress bar from InfoPopper (already included in ZETA 1.0) showing the login for each protocol with a correct login.

It could be that not all your contacts show up immediate in the "People" folder (the standard folder where ZETA/BeOS keeps the contacts), but they will be added in time. If you like to add a contact you can easily do this by performing next steps.Open the People folder and click on Attributes -> Person -> and you will see the 2 mime types added before in the Terminal, IM_Status and IM_Connection. Now you have to create a new person with the "People" app. and then back in the People folder add the IM_Connection info, for instance for ICQ this is mostly a number like 123456, fill in this number right after the persons name under IM Connections like this "icq:123456;". It's the same for the other protocols, you only need to change the info for that. It can't be any easier.

Although there is an application in progress that could do this work for you "Peat" from Das_Jott. More to come over Peat in the future.

This concludes the info so far, I think you can set-up a working version for im_kit very easy this way. Should you encounter any problems you could always contact me over at BeShare/IRC or through mail: Begasus at skynet dot be. Have fun!!!
